Building a Better Future for People and Wildlife

Maono (ma-oh-no) - The Swahili Word for Vision - Drives Us

  • Create Partnerships

Maono believes conservation only succeeds when creating solid partnerships with other NGOs, local communities, and local storytellers.

We can only do our part if we partner with other organizations to spread our programs, establish a credible presence within communities, and lift the next generation.

To that end, we seek out and work with NGOs that have proven success in their region and mission. We bring their innovative solutions or best practices into our programs. By utilizing their existing community networks and those of others, we reach our target audiences on the frontlines of conservation.

Maono is constantly searching for new opportunities to bring our work into the reach of local people through established NGO networks. We believe we can make a difference for people and wildlife by presenting trustworthy information and local stories.

  • Empower Communities

Maono's success depends on reaching communities dealing with challenging wildlife conservation issues. They could be in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, or other East African countries.

Maono adheres to a set of strict requirements for our projects:

    • They must benefit both wildlife and people

    • They must focus on local communities that encounter wildlife

    • The solutions must be workable and functional across various groups

    • Can Maono have a significant impact on the issue?

We reach our audiences through a variety of means. Primarily, we utilize established relationships between various NGOs and the people they serve. These existing networks provide a fast, direct link to communities through local schools, village centers, and other contact points that could most benefit from our programs.

    Other distribution avenues include:

    • Maono YouTube channel,

    • Maono's social media channels

    • Regional and local TV broadcasters,

    • Local schools and colleges

    • National park ranger training and other private preserves

    • In-person visits to hard-to-reach communities.

Using all these various channels, we reach the right people in the right places who can make a real difference.

  • Build the Future

None of these efforts matter unless they provide a meaningful long-term impact. Maono seeks to cement our progress by making durable commitments to our partners, supporting the local communities that learn from our programs, and standing alongside our mentees for as long as they require. We also are dedicated to helping communities understand the enduring benefits of participation in conservation.

    • Reduced livestock predation

    • Increased income from livestock

    • Better protected livestock

    • Basic veterinary care

    • School improvements

    • Tourism revenue sharing

    • Improved awareness about their surrounding environment

By promoting these tangible benefits from conservation, Maono is building change. Change in how people see their relationship with the natural world and its wildlife. As pressure grows on natural resources from mounting population growth, this positive change will only strengthen the chances that local communities and wildlife will thrive together long into the future.
